Time, Climate and Culture

St. Kitts is in the Atlantic Time Zone (UTC/GMT-04:00). There is no Daylight Savings Time (DST) adjustment and in the summertime, the sun rises at about 05:45am and sets at about 06:48pm.

The climate is tropical tempered, by trade winds throughout the year and there is no particularly wet or dry season. The volume of rain varies according to altitude; rain showers can occur throughout the year. The average annual rainfall is about 50 inches to 80 inchesr. Like the other Leeward Islands, St Kitts lies in the track of violent tropical hurricanes which are most likely to develop between August and October. Over the course of a year, the temperature typically varies from 74°F to 88°F and is rarely below 72°F or above 90°F.

Culture is the combination of the arts, beliefs and institutions created by a group of people that share common geography. Here on the Island of St. Kitts, our culture provides a fascinating window into the distant past, and yet it is seems to be evolving right before our eyes. It is a rare treasure chest of traditions and customs brought together from very different lands by very different people. You can see it in the way we dance, taste it in the way we cook, and hear it in the stories we tell.

St. Kitts is also a land of many festivals, with the two main ones being the St. Kitts-Nevis National Carnival - Sugar Mas (December - January) and the St. Kitts Music Festival (end of June).
